WHAT-WHO-WHEN-WHY

WHAT ARE N.V.Qs?

N.V.Q.s are the way that you can prove to others, including potential employers, that you are competent to do your job. These are qualifications based on your ability to care for others both through practical caring activities and through your attitude in meeting service user rights. It also confirms your ability to work within policies and procedures in the care environment.

There are three levels in Health and Social Care, which means that you can achieve a qualification, within your workplace, for all job roles in the care environment.

Level 2:

You need to show that you have good knowledge and understanding of an area of work and the skills to carry out a variety of tasks with some guidance and supervision.

Level 3:

You need to show that you can apply a range of knowledge, skills and understanding to your work and work independently. You may supervise and/or train others.

Level 4:

You need to be working in a specialist job that requires the analysis of information and knowledge to show the skills, understanding and knowledge. You will be working in a technical specialist role, management and developing others.

WHO?

Everyone fulfilling a job role in care, at any level, should have a qualification to national standards. It is the aim of everyone in care to provide a level of competence that is acceptable to the service user and significant interested parties.

WHEN?

An N.V.Q. can be achieved in your workplace at any stage during your career in care.

WHY?

An N.V.Q. acknowledges your competence for the job role; it also provides you with job satisfaction and security. Should you wish to change your job you will have greater success with recognised qualifications. Most of all it is a career pathway to enable you to progress.
